Master Class on Michael Chekhov's Technique on Acting
"An Actor has a thousand eyes."
- Michael Chekhov
The Michael Chekhov technique is a psycho-physical approach to acting. It privileges the imagination as the actor’s source of inspiration and favours an impersonal, objective approach to characterisation. The work is intended to create a real and spontaneous connection between the actor’s physical body and psychology, and to prepare the actor for what Chekhov calls ‘inspired acting.’
He developed an acting technique, a ‘psycho-physical approach’, in which transformation, working with impulse, imagination and inner and outer gesture are central. It offers an actor clear and practical tools in working with imagination, feelings and atmosphere.
Michael Chekhov (1891-1955)
The nephew of Anton Chekhov and considered by Stanislavsky as his ‘most brilliant pupil’, was known as one of Russia’s most outstanding and innovative actors and directors, who intrigued his audience with his character interpretations that were extremely alive and imaginative. After his exile from Russia and stays in Germany, France, England, he settled in America, where he continued his pioneering work.
Sinéad is a theatre director, teacher and performer based in London.
